At The Comical Counselor LLC, we understand that seeking therapy requires trust and vulnerability. Your privacy and confidentiality are fundamental to the therapeutic relationship and are protected by law.

What is Confidentiality?

Confidentiality means that information you share in therapy sessions is private and will not be disclosed to anyone without your written consent, with limited exceptions outlined below.

HIPAA Compliance

The Comical Counselor LLC complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which sets national standards for protecting health information. Your medical records and therapy notes are kept confidential and secure.

Limits to Confidentiality

While confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy, there are limited circumstances where I am legally required to break confidentiality:

  • Imminent Danger: If you express intent to harm yourself or others
  • Child Abuse: If there is suspected abuse or neglect of a minor
  • Elder or Dependent Adult Abuse: If there is suspected abuse of vulnerable adults
  • Court Orders: If legally compelled by a court of law
  • Consultation: I may consult with other professionals for clinical purposes while maintaining your privacy

You have the right to:

  • Request access to your therapy records
  • Request amendments to your records
  • Receive an accounting of disclosures
  • Request restrictions on uses and disclosures
  • Request confidential communications
